PBS recently put out a fantastic documentary on Rachel Carson. Watch it to learn more about her life:

I wish I had seen this before I published my last review. For one thing, I was mistaken to suggest that Silent Spring was the breakthrough work of an unknown civil servant. Her previous book, The Sea Around Us, from 1951, was a bestseller. By the time Silent Spring was published over ten years later, Rachel Carson was already a known and beloved chronicler of the natural world.

And despite being famous for writing about the sea, Carson was a poor swimmer whose only diving experience lasted a few anxious seconds.

I’m resolving to post more often and take less time between reviews. My standard book reviews will be shorter, saving the long in-depth essays for only the most important stuff. This should allow me to publish more posts and to keep choosing my books naturally, being freed from having to deep-review every single thing I finish. Right now I have 8 books read and lined up for review. We’ll see how it goes.

The next review will be in the old format and will go up soon. It’s the most difficult book I’ve had to write about so far, so I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
